I found an article I want to read, but when I click on the view it link it says I have to pay. What's the issue?

Answer

This is an access issue and there are two possible reasons this may be happening.

If you are off-site please go to 1. If not, please go to 2.

1) Are you accessing this article off-site and do not have access to the LANL VPN? If you are, it's possible you aren't using the library's EZproxy server. To access this server, you have to access the library's EXTERNAL page. You can't sign into the LANL internal and go to the library.

To access the external webpage from the internal, go to the top navigation bar and on the far left it says "external," as shown below. This will take you to the external LANL page.

Then, scroll down to the bottom to the dark navy section. There will be a section bolded in white that says "At The Lab." Research Library is the fourth hyperlink and click on it.

You will then be taken to the library's external webpage. On the right, there will be a button that says "Remote Access."

When you click on this, you will be provided instructions on how to access our materials remotely.

2) If you are onsite, or if you are off-site and tried option 1 and it did not work, then there is an issue with access.

It's possible the article you're looking for is in a journal we do carry up until a certain date. We do have backend subscriptions to journals, which will end at a certain year. If the article is current, then we don't have access to the article and it needs to be requested through a request form and proper cost codes are needed.

It's also good to check with a librarian because there are times we do have access to an article, but for some reason you cannot access it, either on-site or with EZproxy. If you have followed all the above steps, and still are having issues, please do not hesitate to contact us at library@lanl.gov.
